Ready or Not; here the Harvest Comes

Ready or not; here the harvest come. I've been so busy getting the beds ready and in good shape, that I have not prepared to preserve the harvest. I better get ready because......

I am still getting some lettuce, but this will end fairly soon. I got about nine potatoes (much more about these later). I harvested a bucket full of garlic. You see the size of one of the bulbs....its in my 3-year old's hand. Most of the bulbs were just slightly smaller than this. The spring planted onion is starting to fall over at the neck; while the fall planted onion is still hanging in there. These bulbs are larger than I thought based on how small the tops are. The fall planted onions appear to be much larger.
That was all from this past week; but check out what's in store in the coming weeks.....
   
I should have some celery, basil, and green beans. I allowed the elephant garlic to go to seed, so hopefully I will harvest some bubils soon. I've got one zucchini flower opened; but its a female...strange....usually males are first. So this one will probably die because there are no open males to pollinate her. I won't have any tomatoes ready in the next week; but that is my first cherokee purple. It looks nice already....won't be long now! There is much more planted. I expect more onion and garlic and who knows what else?

You're at such an exciting stage of the harvesting year when things really start producing - can't help but be a little jealous...particularly of that garlic - it looks amazing, having used all my best heads first I am down to the smaller ones now (from a December harvest) and this years crop has only jsut gone in.

  3. You are about two months ahead of us in the stage of your garden. We won't be seeing anything nearly that interesting by way of harvests until July around here.

    The garlic is a beauty and those fresh potatoes look delicious too.

  5. I always look for your posts because we are in the same county. And now I'm convinced that my onions all died. I don't know why. Maybe the sets were too dried out to begin with. I did wonder about that. They have NO green showing.

  6. An impressive havest, that garlic is huge. What is the variety? Yep, that Cherokee tomato sure is handsome.

    1. Sorry, I usually try to include the variety names. The big bulb is an Applegate Giant. They have been the largest thus far. It is an artichoke type which grows well in mild winter areas.

      Here is what I found about this variety:
      Applegate is a superb mild garlic that is excellent for raw eating as in pesto or added as something crunchy to tuna or chicken salad (it's that mild) or cooking where you want only the most delicate hint of garlic in your dish.

      Applegate is an early harvesting fairly good storing garlic but should be grown in conjunction with a longer storing Porcelain or Silverskin in order to be able to have good garlic year around.

      Grows well in most areas of the USA even along the gulf coast and So. Cal.

  7. Wow that's giant garlic! Looks like you've had a very busy week in the garden. I can't believe your Cherokee purple tomato is that big already- amazing the difference in one zone.

    1. That is so true, bc I have seen some Zone 9 gardeners (just 4 hours away) pulling out ripe tomatoes already.

  9. Great looking stuff and how exciting to have so much more on it's way in! I'm having a bit of gaposis at the moment, but will soon be overrun with small tomatoes, it'll be longer before the big ones come on.
