In the basket is broccoli seed pods and on the paper is some of the actual broccoli seeds.
I also harvested the first of the patty pan squash. This may also be the last because the squash bug is under serious attack (squash bugs).
All of the squash were grilled yesterday. The roma tomatoes were used to make homemade guacamole and the celebrity tomato was used on hamburgers.
This week instead of closing with a preview, I would like to close with unintended benefits. Gardening is for all ages. From the very young to the very old. This makes it the perfect family activity. A great way to spend time together instead of being in front of different TVs. Kids really love it and they are more willing to eat vegetables that they helped grow and harvest. Here are some pics of my kids hunting for zucchini and beans to harvest.
Beautiful harvests and love the pics of the kids in the garden. :D
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is now an adult and lives in PA where she now has chickens and a garden of her own. She always helped in the garden but it was never "hers' until she had her own patch of land to work. I love that she took her experience with us at home and carried on the good tradition of keeping a kitchen garden. Enjoy the family time in the garden and know that you have planted seeds that may be with them the rest of their lives.
I always loved helping my parents garden and harvest (in an inner-city, no less), and now I have a farm and garden of my own! I definitely attribute my passion for veggies to my parents and grandparents.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are able to get a few more harvests of pattypans before the bugs take over. :(
Enjoy those patty pans! I gave up growing patty pans because the vine borers killed the plants so quickly.. grrr to those stupid pests! That's great that your kids like helping in the garden. Hopefully the love for gardening will pass through the generations.
ReplyDeleteI love your overview picture of all your harvests for this week, with the broccoli seeds in the corner. :)
ReplyDeleteI, too, have found that my kids enjoy the garden with me, and are much more willing to eat vegetables if they see them in our own garden.
wow that's an awesome harvest. The thing I DON"T miss about TX is the bugs! ;-)
ReplyDeleteLove the pics of your kids harvesting. Can they please tell mine that that its good to eat stuff that you grow ...although mine eat lots of veggies from the garden its always only those they already liked: tomatoes, peas etc it hasn't worked for pumpkin, or eggplant which they still don't like. Oh well more for me i guess...
ReplyDeleteI love how gardening brings families closer together. Beautiful pics.
