The Sweet Potatoes have Arrived

We used 2 store bought organic sweet potatoes to grow slips. From that, we planted 13 slips. I did not allow any of the vines to drop any new roots as they grew because the area was quite tight.

So what did we get? Well, we haven't cleaned and weighed yet.....but here is a teaser:

That is an average sized 3 year old boy holding one.

Just in case you are wondering; this is how they look in the ground:

And this is how they looked; ;just before digging....the hoops mark the edges of the 4x8 bed.

  2. How cool. How awesome. You did great. Now for some baked sweet potatoes, and sweet potatoes and chicken, and whatever other favorite recipes you have. (The above are my favorites.) :)

  4. I have a couple of sweet potato vines but I had no idea what to expect when I dug them up! Thanks for the photos - I am going to check my plants in the morning.

  5. When I grew them last year I only got one big one at the root base but I did get smaller ones where the vines rooted into the ground. NExt time I'll definitely keep them from rooting elsewhere as you did and see if I can achieve something resembling yours - they are absolutely fabulous.

  6. Oh am I jealous! I haven't been able to grow sweets here in the desert. Had the perfect acid sandy soil for them down in TX but they hate the soil here. This year tried again (I do every few years) out of a dozen slips one lived and it still is very puny looking. So seriously doubt there will be any for me again. The squash on the other hand are intent on taking over the world!

  7. How exciting! I'm growing sweet potatoes for the first time and I'm hoping they will look as lovely as yours. Although I have let them take over the world so they've probably put down lots of side roots.

  8. Wow, what a great harvest!! Gardeners have a very hard time growing sweet potatoes in our area. Our growing season is just too short!!

  9. OK, I'm convinced, but curious. Can you eat all those before they go bad? That's quite a harvest!
